Influenza & Older Adults: Why Prevention Matters Influenza (the flu) is more than just a bad cold—especially for older adults. As we age, our immune systems naturally become weaker, making it harder to fight off infections like the flu. Adults age 65 and older are at a higher risk for serious flu-related complications, including pneumonia, hospitalization, and even death. Flu symptoms in older adults may not always look the same as in younger people. Fever may be mild or absent, but symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, or a sudden decline in daily functioning can be signs of influenza. Because of this, early recognition and treatment are very important. The good news: The flu is largely preventable. Getting a yearly flu vaccine is the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness. Vaccination can help prevent hospitalization and lessen symptoms if the flu does occur. Higher-dose and enhanced flu vaccines are available and are specifically designed to better protect older adults. Additional ways to stay protected include: -Washing hands frequently with soap and water -Avoiding close contact with people who are sick -Covering coughs and sneezes -Staying home when feeling unwell -Seeking medical care early if flu symptoms appear Protecting older adults from influenza helps keep individuals, families, and communities healthier—especially during flu season. Prevention truly saves lives. #Influenza #FluSeason #HealthyAging #SeniorHealth #OlderAdults #FluPrevention #GetVaccinated #PublicHealth #WellnessMatters #CaregiverSupport #HigherPath
