Bickford of Chesterfield

Your loved one deserves to live the best life possible

Watch your loved one thrive in an environment that feels like home

Navigating the aging journey is difficult.

We understand what’s at stake here: it’s not just someone, it’s your loved one.

Meanwhile, it’s on you to make the difficult decisions.

There's a Higher Path for our seniors

Senior care today is reactive, expensive, and siloed. It’s a sick-care system, not a health-care system (designed to keep seniors healthy). Most of us have accepted this status quo because it feels too big and complex to change. Not us. We’re taking the road less traveled and championing a higher standard of senior care.

At Bickford of Chesterfield, we embrace the advancements in medical care that offer new beginnings for so many. Dementia is a condition that affects not just memory but also one’s personality and emotional well-being. For Miss B, the reality of living with dementia was compounded by episodes of psychosis that included vivid hallucinations and intense feelings of paranoia. At times, she would express fear over imagined threats, leading to confusion and distress that not only affected her but also deeply impacted her caregivers and daily care. Miss B’s days were often filled with uncertainty. The once vibrant woman, known for her love of gardening and HGTV, found herself trapped in a fog of confusion. Her family and caregivers worked tirelessly to provide reassurance and comfort, but the struggle was palpable, and there were days when hope seemed distant. After many discussions during our Higher Path meetings, a decision was made to trial a new medication specifically designed to address the symptoms of dementia with psychosis. Curana providers emphasized the importance of monitoring her response closely, and the family and BFMs rallied around her, providing love and support during this transitional phase. The medication had not only alleviated her symptoms but had also restored her sense of self. She began to reconnect with her surroundings, engaging in conversations and sharing in meals that brought smiles to everyone around her. Miss B’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the impact of compassionate care and innovative treatments. Her journey shows that even in the face of debilitating conditions like dementia and psychosis, hope can flourish. As we celebrate her newfound peace, we are reminded of the importance of perseverance, support, and the continual pursuit of better treatments for those facing similar battles. “Life is a garden. Sometimes, we must weather the storms, but with the right care and love, we can bloom again.” Here’s to many more stories of resilience, healing, and the enduring power of a higher path mindset for our seniors at Bickford of Chesterfield. #HigherPathSuccessStory #AssistedLiving

At Bickford of Chesterfield Assisted Living, we take pride in supporting our residents in maintaining their independence while ensuring their safety. One of our remarkable residents, Mr. M, is a retired Marine known for his fierce independence and strong spirit. However, this determination sometimes made it difficult for him to ask for help, especially when he faced challenges related to mobility. Despite our commitment to providing care, Mr. M experienced a few close calls with falls, prompting concern among the staff and his family. Understanding his need for autonomy while also ensuring his safety, we decided to review fall footage during our Higher path meetings provided by SafelyU to determine where our staff can assist him. The footage provided us with crucial insights into Mr. M’s daily routine. We observed that he often attempted to perform tasks that required assistance, such as reaching for items that were out of his reach or moving around the room in search of snacks to satisfy his late night sweet tooth. Armed with this information, we took a proactive approach. We developed a personalized care plan that included timely check-ins from staff during the times we identified as risky. Additionally, we provided Mr. M with a bedside table and a call button he could use whenever he felt the need for assistance, empowering him to reach out without feeling like he was losing his independence. With the combination of the fall camera and the tailored support plan, Mr. M reported feeling more secure in his environment. He could still maintain his routine while knowing help was readily available if needed. Since implementing these measures, he has not experienced any falls, allowing him to engage in activities he loves without fear. This success story is a testament to the power of innovation and attentive care in assisted living. By using SafelyU technology to understand and support Mr. M’s needs, we have helped him embrace his independence while ensuring his safety. Today, he confidently navigates his space, participates in community events, and continues to inspire others with his resilience and spirit. #HigherPath #AssistedLiving #BickfordCelebratesNALW

At Bickford of Chesterfield Assisted Living, we strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for all our residents, especially those who face unique challenges. One such resident, Mr. B, has a long history of falls and is nonverbal, which made understanding his needs particularly challenging. Despite our best efforts to provide care, Mr. B experienced several falls, raising concerns among the staff and his family. After extensive discussions and brainstorming sessions during our higher path meetings, we decided to review all SafelyU camera footage in his room to better monitor his activities, particularly during the evenings when most of the falls occurred. The footage from the camera revealed invaluable insights. It showed that Mr. B frequently attempted to get up at night to turn off the TV, which had been left on. This simple action, driven by his desire for a quieter environment, was the primary trigger for his falls. Once we identified the root cause, we quickly implemented a solution. We began turning off the TV at bedtime and provided Mr. B with a simple remote control that was easy for him to use, allowing him to turn the TV on or off without the need to get out of bed. Additionally, we increased the visibility of the nightlights in his room and ensured that the furniture was arranged to minimize the risk of tripping. Since these adjustments were made, Mr. B has decreased his fall reports to nearly zero. The staff and his family celebrated this significant milestone, highlighting the importance of understanding the unique needs of each resident. This success story not only improved Mr. B’s safety and quality of life but also reinforced the value of innovative solutions in assisted living with SafelyU. By leveraging technology and attentive observation, we were able to turn a challenging situation into a triumphant success, ensuring that Mr. B can enjoy his evenings in peace, all while keeping him safe and secure in his room. As we age, our risk for falls increases, and our ability to recover decreases. That’s why reducing fall risk is so critical, and the prevalence of falls among older adults is so concerning. In fact, 1 in 4 falls in senior living results in a higher level of care. But at Bickford of Chesterfield, we manage falls with SafelyYou’s extraordinary combination of world-leading AI and remote clinical support, which is proven to reduce falls and fall-related ER visits. So, our residents stay safer, are more likely to stay out of the ER, and stay in the community they trust to care for them. #WeAgeWell #FallsPreventionAwarenessMonth

This is what Bickford is all about, making your family a part of ours! Last weekend, Ms. B, or Granny B, as her family affectionately calls her had a celebration for Grandson Paul and his new wife to celebrate their marriage. Ms. B was unable to attend the wedding, but invited her family to celebrate together in Bickford's Activity Room! The family dined together, laughed, and got many family photos to remember these moments in years to come! We are thankful to have Ms. B and her family be a part of ours! Today we celebrate Ms. H who transitioned to Bickford of Chesterfield this past spring from North Carolina to be closer to her family. The moment Ms. H stepped foot into her new home, she was greeted with warmth and kindness and set on a higher path journey by our dedicated BLTs (Bickford Leadership Team members) . Fellow residents and BFM’s (Bickford Family Members) welcomed her with open arms and created an immediate sense of belonging. She quickly discovered that assisted living was not just a place to live, but a community that embraced and celebrated everyone’s unique journey. Assisted Living at Bickford of Chesterfield has provided her with a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment. She eagerly volunteered her time to help fellow residents, becoming a trusted friend and confidant to those who needed a listening ear. We quickly recognized the joy that serving brings her and the joy she finds in making a difference. She has taken up volunteering at the local food bank through St Matthias’ Episcopal Church located across the street. She has found immense satisfaction in making a positive impact on the lives of others, reaffirming her belief that it's never too late to make a difference. Many mornings you can find her dancing on the front porch enjoying her coffee with sunshine and socializing with our many visitors. The success story of Ms. H’s transition into assisted living is a testament to the transformative power of community and support. It showcases the possibilities that arise when individuals embrace change with an open heart and a positive mindset. Her story reminds us that age is just a number and that new beginnings can bring immense joy, fulfillment, and love. Barbara Deponte, LPN the new Health and Wellness Coordinator joined Bickford on April 29th. She has been quickly getting to know the BFMs and residents in Mary Bs. Her main focus will be on Mary Bs care and management of the BFMs, as well as offering support to Nurse Grace as needed. Before migrating to the United States, Barbara was a Civil Engineer in the Philippines. Barbara joins us from Lakewood Retirement Community, Henrico where she was for 18 years as an Admin Nurse and AL Nurse Manager. Barbara has 3 children one just graduated from VCU Pharmacy School with a Doctor of Pharmacy, her daughter is a PICU Nurse at VCU and her oldest is an electrician in Richmond. Her husband is in Management at Wegmans. Right now, she spends a lot of her free time caring for her mom who lives with her. We are so excited to have this addition to our Nursing team! My (name removed) is happy and loves the activities and does wish there were more outings, even the scenic drives. I am satisfied with her care at this point and the staff are friendly and seem helpful. We have the least amount of care at this point, so I don't have much to go on as far as the medical services.
