Erlene’s story at Bickford of Chesapeake is a heart-lifting reminder that with the right support, a person’s spark never truly disappears—it simply needs the right conditions to shine again.
Before coming to Bickford, Erlene was struggling. Living alone in her independent living apartment, she became increasingly isolated as her health declined and her confidence faded. Frequent emergency room visits left both her and her daughter exhausted and worried.
When Erlene first moved to Bickford, she spent much of her time in her apartment, hesitant to engage as she adjusted to her new surroundings. Meals were often brought to her room, and she kept to herself while finding her footing.
This is where the Higher Path approach made the difference. Erlene began physical and occupational therapy with Fox Rehab, where therapists used patience, encouragement, and strong rapport to gently draw her out for sessions. Health and Wellness Director Jasmine and Curana Health supported her by introducing medication to help improve her appetite and mood, giving her the foundation she needed to begin feeling better both physically and emotionally.
Behind the scenes, Bickford’s nursing and leadership teams closely monitored her progress during Higher Path meetings. They made intentional decisions to support her socially as well, thoughtfully seating her with residents she could connect with—helping her feel more comfortable and welcomed during meals.
Gradually, Erlene began spending more time outside her room, each step requiring less encouragement than the last. Therapy sessions began to end with something special—Erlene playing the piano, reconnecting with a lifelong passion that had always been part of who she was.
A defining moment came when Sherlisa, Bickford’s Montessori Engagement Coordinator and a familiar face from Erlene’s previous residence, thoughtfully applied Montessori principles by tapping into Erlene’s personal history and strengths. She invited Erlene to provide the music for Bickford’s Veterans Day Ceremony. Erlene embraced the opportunity, carefully planning and practicing before performing with pride for the entire community. It was a turning point—one that restored her confidence and sense of purpose.
Since then, Erlene’s transformation has continued to bloom. Today, she participates in a wide range of activities, including musical entertainment, Bible study, Bingo, resident council, and crafting. She enjoys meals in the dining room, walks independently with her walker, manages more of her own self-care, and often steps out on her own to play the piano or join in social life.
Erlene’s journey is a Higher Path success story not because it was easy, but because it was possible. Through proactive care, collaboration, meaningful engagement, and genuine compassion, Erlene rediscovered herself—and today, she is not just living at Bickford of Chesapeake, she is thriving.

What a perfect way to brighten up a cloudy Saturday! Tidewater Clowns Around rolled into our community and brought the sunshine with them. From dancing and singing to cracking jokes and getting everyone involved in games, their show was full of laughs and great energy. The performance was interactive, entertaining, and had our residents smiling from start to finish. And the fun didn’t stop there — they even handed out gifts and stayed to chat with everyone afterward. Talk about spreading joy! Bickford of Chesapeake Assisted Living and Memory Care

Look who joined the cookie baking committee this time! Our kitchen was filled with the irresistible smell of oatmeal raisin and snickerdoodle cookies, and they tasted just as amazing as they smelled. Sweet treats, sweet moments, and even sweeter smiles filled our community! Our housekeeper Monica joined the baking experience alongside the newest committee members Erlene and Helga. Once again, we had a host of cookie taste testers waiting around for cookies! Bickford of Chesapeake Assisted Living and Memory Care

Resident Council meetings give residents an opportunity to share feedback and talk about day-to-day life in the community. Conversations often include activities and outings, dining preferences, community routines, and general quality-of-life topics. Residents also have time to ask questions and offer suggestions. Resident Council offers a regular opportunity for communication and helps keep residents informed while allowing leadership to consider resident input—after all, it is their home. We had our first birthday party of the year, and it was absolutely amazing! Linda and Lyle — a dynamic duet who also happen to be married — filled the room with fun songs and great energy. Lyle kept us laughing with his classic “dad jokes” in between tunes, which made the afternoon even more special. With only one January birthday to celebrate, our birthday queen truly had her moment to shine. It was a sweet, cheerful celebration full of music, laughter, and love. Take us to the warmth and excitement of the Hawaiian Islands—our residents and BFMs experienced just that at Luau Day, featuring a lively performance by Eddie Sal. With true aloha spirit, residents and team members enjoyed celebrating together while savoring kalua pork, coconut shrimp, and other Hawaiian-inspired delights, playing Hawaiian-themed bingo, and dancing the day away at a festive, spirited party filled with mahalo moments. What a wonderful celebration of community, culture, and shared delight. Bickford of Chesapeake Assisted Living and Memory Care
