This month, we’re reflecting on four themes that shape daily life inside our Branch: love, happiness, family, and assisted living. This week with "Cooking with Alonda" in our Montessori Memory Care, we did mini crepes! Cooking activities in Bickford's Montessori-based memory care is incredibly effective for engaging the senses and fostering independence through familiar, purposeful tasks. By letting residents choose between different fruits and creams is a subtle but vital way to honor their autonomy by giving our amazing residents the Power of Choice & Independence. We exercised Sensory & Cognitive Engagement by discussing "fruits vs. vegetables" and exploring different flavors and creams stimulating cognitive recall and sensory awareness. We worked on skill preservation by doing tasks like cleaning fruit, mixing batter, and chopping, which is excellent for maintaining fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. While short-term recall might be a struggle, the physical rhythm of whisking or "cleaning fruit" often lives in the Procedural Memory, allowing residents to feel "at home" in their movements. We all were able to socially connect by preparing food together which often sparks "reminiscence," where residents share stories of their own kitchens and favorite family recipes. Food is a universal language. Sharing a kitchen task levels the playing field and turns "residents" back into "peers" sharing a meal. And most of all, we created success & joy: The fact that everyone went for seconds is the ultimate indicator of a successful, dignified activity that provided both nutrition and a sense of accomplishment.
