Message from the Director:
Assisted Living is More Than Just a Place to Live
When people hear “assisted living,” they often think it means giving something up. But at Bickford of Fort Dodge, it’s really about gaining support, connection, and a better quality of life.
What Assisted Living Really Is
Assisted living isn’t a nursing home — it’s a welcoming community designed to help older adults live comfortably and confidently. Residents receive support with things like medications, meals, or daily routines, while continuing to live with independence, dignity, and choice.
The Power of Community
One of the greatest benefits is connection. Loneliness can impact overall health, but at Bickford, residents enjoy daily opportunities to engage, socialize, and find purpose — through activities, shared meals, laughter, and meaningful relationships.
As one resident shared, “I haven’t laughed this much in years.”
A Gift for Families
For families, assisted living often brings relief and reconnection. When caregiving stress is reduced, loved ones can focus on simply being together again — enjoying visits, conversations, and time well spent.
Choosing the Right Community Matters
When exploring assisted living, look for:
• Caring, well-trained staff
• A clean, comfortable, home-like setting
• Engaging social and wellness opportunities
• Residents who look happy and involved
And most importantly — trust how it feels.
A New Chapter Begins
Assisted living isn’t the end of independence. It’s the beginning of a supported life filled with possibility.
Let’s change the way we talk about aging — because it’s not just about where you live, it’s about how you live.
Give us a call or stop by and see how Bickford of Fort Dodge does whatever it takes to help our residents live happier, healthier, longer!
We welcome you in for a meal and a tour. Contac our Family Advocate, Mercedes (515) 571-5492 to schedule a visit.

Valentine’s Day looks a little different here, and that’s what makes it beautiful! Congrats to our 2026 Valentine’s Day King and Queen Sam and Marilyn! This day isn’t only about romance. It’s about connection, kindness, and honoring love in all its forms. The kind that lingers, the kind that remembers, and the kind that still finds room to smile. Today we celebrated love in its everyday form. Friends sitting side by side, teasing each other, sharing a memory, and reminding us that companionship doesn’t fade with time. It grows richer, warmer, and more meaningful. These friendships are built on shared meals, familiar faces, and the comfort of knowing someone is always nearby. On Valentine’s Day and every day, love lives here in smiles, kindness, and togetherness

Super Bowl Sunday fun! Residents didn’t care who won, for the most part, but they sure enjoyed the pickle wraps, Rice Krispie bars, Dunkaroo Dip, and sausage and cheese they snacked on!

Foot care becomes even more important when there’s a chance to get professional support right where people live. Preferred Podiatry’s Morgan Flaherty, NP will be available on February 25 at 1pm, which gives older adults a convenient opportunity to have their feet checked, ask questions, and address issues before they become serious. Why foot care matters for older adults Balance and fall prevention — Foot pain, long nails, or reduced sensation can change how someone walks, increasing the risk of falls. Slower healing — Reduced circulation means small cuts or blisters can turn into infections if not noticed early. Reduced sensation — Conditions like diabetes can make it hard to feel injuries, so problems may go unnoticed. Joint and bone changes — Arthritis, bunions, and deformities make walking painful and limit mobility. Fragile skin — Dry, thin skin cracks easily, creating openings for infection. What good foot care includes Daily checks for redness, swelling, cuts, or changes in shape. Proper nail trimming to prevent ingrown nails. Moisturizing to prevent cracking, avoiding the spaces between toes. Supportive, well‑fitting shoes to reduce pressure and rubbing. Professional care for calluses, corns, or persistent pain. Why the February 25 visit matters A scheduled visit from a foot‑care professional makes it easier for older adults to stay ahead of problems. It supports mobility, comfort, and independence, and it helps catch issues early—especially for those with diabetes, circulation problems, or chronic foot pain. If you would like to make sure your loved one is on the list call Laura RN at 515-573-3300.
