Our Big News: Welcoming Our Howie to the Community
This past weekend, something incredible happened — something our family has been working toward, advocating for, and dreaming about for many months. After countless conversations, concerns, and hopes shared with anyone who would listen, we finally received our bus.
And not just any bus, We received our Howie.
Right now, Howie needs a little bit of work — a few minor fixes, some tuning, and a bit of love — but once that’s done, it will be ready to roll. Ready for appointments. Ready for activities. Ready for everyday life to feel a little less complicated and a lot more possible.
But this isn’t just a win for our team, This is a win for our entire community.
Why Howie Matters So Much
Transportation is something many people take for granted. You hop in a car, you go where you need to go, and you don’t think twice. But for families like ours — and for many others in our community — transportation is a daily barrier. It affects access to healthcare, social opportunities, and basic independence.
When transportation is unreliable or unavailable:
Appointments get missed. Services become harder to access. Families lose valuable time, energy, and stability. Community participation becomes limited. People who already face challenges end up facing even more.
Howie changes that.
Not just for us, but as a symbol of what’s possible when a community listens, advocates, and works together.
A Step Toward Inclusion
Reliable transportation isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about dignity. It’s about equity. It’s about ensuring that every member of our community — regardless of ability, age, or circumstance — has the chance to show up, participate, and thrive.
Howie represents:
Independence for our tenants who often feel stuck. Consistency in accessing not only medical care but for hearing care, eye care and dental care. Opportunity to join activities, events, and community spaces. Visibility for the ongoing need for accessible transportation solutions.
This bus is more than a vehicle.
It’s a reminder that when we speak up, when we advocate, and when we refuse to settle for “that’s just how it is,” change can happen.
Looking Ahead
Once Howie is fully repaired and ready, we’ll be rolling into appointments and activities with a sense of relief we haven’t felt in a long time. But we’re also carrying something bigger: the hope that our story encourages more conversations, more solutions, and more support for accessible transportation in our community.
Because no family should have to fight this hard just to get where they need to go.
And no community is complete until everyone can participate fully.
For now, we’re celebrating this milestone — and we’re grateful.
Grateful for progress, grateful for support, and grateful for the road ahead.

Friendship and connection never go out of style. Today, a family member said something to me that really stuck: “When it comes to my mom’s well-being, it’s better to be a minute too early than a minute too late.” Through what felt like divine coincidence, they were able to step in during a situation that could have become a much bigger one. As they looked deeper, they realized there had been signs all along — little things Mom was very good at covering up. The family shared that moving her to Bickford was the right choice. One of their biggest worries was socialization. Every time they visited before, Mom seemed “busy” — doing puzzles, cleaning, staying occupied. But busy is not the same as connection. At Bickford, she’s not just staying occupied. She’s engaging, laughing, sharing meals, participating in activities, and building meaningful relationships. That social connection matters more than people realize. Too often, when the “minute is too late,” it means something significant has already happened that changes the trajectory of a senior’s life. At Bickford, our Higher Path approach is about being proactive instead of reactive — helping families navigate changes early, prevent avoidable crises, and support seniors in living fuller, safer, more connected lives. If someone you love may benefit from more support, connection, or community, we’d love to help. On Wednesday, we held a Tea Party to honor our beautiful ladies. Jess had prepared some reminiscing topics and the laughter and smiles over the memories was very touching. We also played “Name the Cake” and “ What are you Drinking” to mix things up a little! Cake Balls and dipped strawberries were a hit along with coffee and tea!

Today at Bickford, our ladies enjoyed a relaxing and serene Spa Day filled with polished nails, cosmetics, sweet treats, and lots of laughter. Residents were pampered with fresh nail polish colors, a little glam time, yummy chicken salad on crackers, and delicious sugar cookies that disappeared faster than the hand lotion. The atmosphere was peaceful… mostly. Jess attempted to set the mood with her “relaxing” music playlist, which may or may not have sounded like elevator music trapped inside a rainstorm soundtrack. It was a beautiful afternoon of relaxation, friendship, and feeling refreshed inside and out. At Bickford, we believe everyone deserves a little pampering now and then

During our Golden Gals Ladies Group on Tuesday, I asked the ladies to think about the person to their left, and then share those thoughts with them. WOW, the kindness was so touching. The relationships that are built at Bickford Senior Living and the importance of those really showed!

At Bickford of Fort Dodge, we believe senior living should feel just like home—because it is home. What makes Bickford different isn’t just what we do, it’s how we do it. Our smaller, more intimate community means every resident is truly known—not just by name, but by their stories, routines, and the little things that matter most. Our higher staff-to-resident ratio allows us to give more time, more attention, and more personalized care every single day. Families often tell us the same thing after walking through our doors: “It just feels different here.” That feeling comes from the relationships we build, the home-cooked meals from our Breadbasket kitchen, and the peace of mind knowing your loved one is cared for like family. Whether your loved one needs a little extra help or more advanced support, we offer a full continuum of care so they can comfortably age in place without the stress of moving again. If you’ve been wondering what the next step looks like, we’d love to walk that journey with you. Schedule your tour with Mercedes, our Family Advocate, today at 515-605-7649. Come see what makes Bickford feel like home. #GreaterGrowthAlliance #BickfordofFortDodge #Family

During Nurses Week, we take a moment to recognize the heart, compassion, and dedication that nurses bring into the lives of others every single day. This week, we are especially grateful for someone who truly embodies all of that and more—our Health & Wellness Director, Laura. Laura is so much more than a nurse. She is a steady presence, a listening ear, and an advocate for every resident who calls Bickford home. Whether she’s checking in on someone who just needs a little extra reassurance, coordinating care behind the scenes, or supporting families through important decisions, Laura does it all with genuine kindness and grace. What makes Laura so special is the way she connects with people. She doesn’t just provide care—she builds relationships. She knows our residents, understands their needs, and treats each person with the respect and dignity they deserve. Families trust her, our team relies on her, and our residents feel safe because of her. At Bickford, we talk a lot about creating a home-like environment where everyone feels known and cared for—and Laura plays a huge role in making that happen every day. Her leadership helps ensure that our care is not only high-quality, but also deeply personal. Laura, we are so lucky to have you. Thank you for the compassion you show, the care you give, and the difference you make in the lives of so many. #BickfordofFortDodge #NursesWeek #CaringMatters
