A reminder that connection matters more than correction. Spending time with residents living with memory care challenges means meeting them where they are—not where we expect them to be. Their reality may look different from ours, but their emotions are real, valid, and deserving of respect. Sometimes it’s not about reminding someone of the “truth,” but about stepping into their world with empathy, patience, and kindness. A simple conversation, a shared smile, or even just being present can make all the difference. In their reality, they are not lost—they are living a different story. And it’s an honor to walk alongside them in it.

A Proud Day at Bickford! Today we celebrate two of our residents being chosen to represent Bickford through the Memories in the Making program at the upcoming Live Auction on May 1st at Vibrant Arena! Memories in the Making, a program through the Alzheimer’s Association, gives individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia the opportunity to express themselves through art. Each painting tells a story, captures emotion, and highlights the creativity that continues to shine through every stage of life. Proceeds from the program help support Alzheimer’s care, education, and research. We are incredibly proud to share that our very own Dottie had her painting selected for the Live Auction, and a beautiful piece painted by Squirrel was also chosen for the Silent Auction — an amazing accomplishment and honor for our Bickford artists! Congratulations to our talented residents for sharing their creativity and helping make a difference through art. #BickfordLife #MemoriesInTheMaking #AlzheimersAssociation #SeniorLivingArt #MakingMemories

Opening Day of Baseball at Bickford Senior Living! We kicked off baseball season in the best way — with a delicious grilled meal prepared by our amazing Bread Basket Manager, Chris, and her team! Residents enjoyed all-time ballpark favorites including hot dogs, chili dogs, hamburgers, macaroni salad, chips, pretzels and ice cream sundaes. Before digging in, everyone joined together to sing the classic “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” setting the perfect game-day spirit! After lunch, residents played catch and took turns hitting the ball off the tee, bringing lots of smiles and friendly competition. The afternoon was complete with Gatorade, popcorn, and plenty of snacks while we watched the New York Yankees take on the San Francisco Giants. After a quick resident poll, Christina proudly announced that the Chicago Cubs were among the most popular favorite teams here at Bickford! A home run kind of day filled with great food, fun activities, and wonderful memories together.

Today our residents enjoyed a lively round of Penny Pitch, testing their aim for a chance to win some exciting prizes. Each toss brought cheers, laughter, and a little friendly competition as pennies landed (or bounced!) across the board. From tasty treats to fun surprises, everyone had a great time celebrating the joy of simple games and shared moments together. Activities like this keep spirits high while encouraging coordination, focus, and social connection. A wonderful afternoon filled with smiles, laughter, and winning moments! #AssistedLivingFun #SeniorLivingActivities #MakingMemories #PennyPitch

Advise from HWD, Crystal Anderson Spring often brings unpredictable weather—cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and sudden chills in the evening. For older adults, these fluctuations can be more than just inconvenient; they can affect comfort, health, and overall well-being. That’s why two simple habits—layering clothing and staying hydrated—are especially important during this season. Layering clothes allows the body to adjust easily to changing temperatures. As we age, our bodies can become less efficient at regulating temperature, making it harder to stay comfortable. Wearing multiple light layers instead of one heavy garment makes it easier to add or remove clothing throughout the day, helping prevent overheating or getting too cold. Breathable fabrics like cotton are ideal, and a light jacket or sweater can make all the difference during brisk spring mornings. Hydration is just as crucial. Many older adults may not feel thirsty as often as they should, but the body still needs a steady intake of fluids to function properly. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even more serious health issues. With spring activities increasing—gardening, walking, or simply spending more time outdoors—it’s important to drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Herbal teas, soups, and water-rich fruits like watermelon and oranges can also help maintain hydration. By paying attention to these small but important habits, older adults can enjoy the beauty of spring comfortably and safely. Staying prepared with layers and keeping hydrated supports both independence and health, making the season more enjoyable.
