Around here, retirement isn’t so easy… After a recent visit to the eye doctor, Jerry learned that his vision had gotten worse. He came back feeling discouraged and even told me he thought it might be time to retire from his Bickford Duties. One of the things I love most about Montessori is that when something becomes difficult, we don’t take away a person’s purpose—we adapt the environment so they can continue to succeed. Our first adaptation was switching to a large-numbered bingo board, making it much easier for Jerry to call bingo without straining to see the tiny bingo balls. These simple changes have made a big difference. Jerry is still doing what he loves, still helping our community, and still proving that purpose doesn’t have an expiration date. Sometimes independence isn’t about doing things the way you’ve always done them—it’s about finding a new way to keep doing what brings you joy. Way to go, Jerry! Sometimes the biggest victories are the quiet ones. When Rich moved to Bickford a little over a month ago, he was understandably hesitant to leave the comfort of his room. New surroundings can be a big adjustment, and we believe everyone deserves the time and support they need to feel at home. Our amazing occupational therapist, Jess, has been working one-on-one with Rich, setting a simple but meaningful goal: attend just one activity each day. Today, that activity was Music with Ken Keller… and the smile on Rich’s face while drumming says it all! Moments like these remind us that progress isn’t measured by giant leaps—it’s found in the courage to take one small step at a time.
