Finding Big Joy in Little Words: A Simple Brain Game with Powerful Benefits
In assisted living communities, it’s often the simplest activities that bring the greatest rewards. One such activity—finding little words hidden inside bigger words—is more than just a fun pastime. It’s a meaningful brain game that supports cognitive health, sparks social connection, and brings a sense of accomplishment to residents of all abilities.
What Is the “Little Words in Big Words” Game?
This brain game is exactly what it sounds like: taking a larger word and discovering all the smaller words that can be made from its letters. For example, the word “celebration” might reveal smaller words like “tone,” “note,” “table,”
It builds Confidence and a Sense of Achievement
Each word found—no matter how small—feels like a win. For residents who may struggle with more complex tasks, this game offers achievable success and a boost in self-esteem.
When played in a group setting, this activity becomes a shared experience. Residents can collaborate, compare answers, and laugh together over unexpected word finds. It’s a natural way to spark conversation and strengthen community.
Incorporating this brain game into daily or weekly programming is simple. It can be part of morning activities, a quiet afternoon option, or even a friendly competition. Writing the “big word” on a whiteboard or handing out printed sheets allows everyone to participate at their own pace.
You can also tie it into seasonal events—think words like “springtime,” “gratitude,” or “celebrate.” Adding a theme makes the activity feel fresh and relevant.
A Small Game with a Big Impact
At its heart, finding little words inside big words reminds us that even the smallest discoveries can bring joy. In assisted living, where meaningful engagement is so important, this simple brain game offers a powerful way to nurture the mind, uplift the spirit, and bring people together.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

Today we had the pleasure of Cruising the Seas. We had entertainment and took portraits. We had a a virtual tour of a cruise ship and enjoyed Karoake. We also enjoyed our singing bartender Tricia during our special Happy Hour in our Bistro. We enjoyed a wonderful day at sea.

We had the joy of having Charlie, the St. Charles K-9 comfort dog visit our branch. The residents enjoyed getting to pet Charlie and ask Officer Kramer lots of questions. It was a very happy and educational visit for both our Assisted Living and Mary B's residents. #Bickford of St. Charles #assisted living #memory care

Our Bickford of St. Charles Family had a training in March on signs and symptoms of dehydration. One of the most common causes of dehydration prescribed water pills. Residents on water pills are very resistant to drinking water or juice due to the increased urgency and frequency of urination due to the water pills. Our Care Team is educated to remind residents we are their to assist! Our Residents Service Plans include instruction on personalized voiding schedules and assistance with product refreshing. Hence, our Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated throughout the day and educated on the effects of dehydration including confusion, urinary tract infections, and fatigue. Most Residents, even our stubborn ones, appreciate the education!! #Higher Path. #St. Charles.

Today residents in both AL and Mary B’s decorated eggs two different ways. They did it the old fashion way with the color dye kit and vinegar. The second way required ziploc bags, rice and food coloring. Everyone had a wonderful time. #Bickford of St. Charles #montessori #assisted living #memory care
