Finding Big Joy in Little Words: A Simple Brain Game with Powerful Benefits
In assisted living communities, it’s often the simplest activities that bring the greatest rewards. One such activity—finding little words hidden inside bigger words—is more than just a fun pastime. It’s a meaningful brain game that supports cognitive health, sparks social connection, and brings a sense of accomplishment to residents of all abilities.
What Is the “Little Words in Big Words” Game?
This brain game is exactly what it sounds like: taking a larger word and discovering all the smaller words that can be made from its letters. For example, the word “celebration” might reveal smaller words like “tone,” “note,” “table,”
It builds Confidence and a Sense of Achievement
Each word found—no matter how small—feels like a win. For residents who may struggle with more complex tasks, this game offers achievable success and a boost in self-esteem.
When played in a group setting, this activity becomes a shared experience. Residents can collaborate, compare answers, and laugh together over unexpected word finds. It’s a natural way to spark conversation and strengthen community.
Incorporating this brain game into daily or weekly programming is simple. It can be part of morning activities, a quiet afternoon option, or even a friendly competition. Writing the “big word” on a whiteboard or handing out printed sheets allows everyone to participate at their own pace.
You can also tie it into seasonal events—think words like “springtime,” “gratitude,” or “celebrate.” Adding a theme makes the activity feel fresh and relevant.
A Small Game with a Big Impact
At its heart, finding little words inside big words reminds us that even the smallest discoveries can bring joy. In assisted living, where meaningful engagement is so important, this simple brain game offers a powerful way to nurture the mind, uplift the spirit, and bring people together.
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

A Higher Path to Medication Safety Managing medications at home becomes increasingly difficult with age. National research shows that nearly 50% of older adults do not take medications exactly as prescribed, often due to forgetfulness, complex schedules, or changes in health needs. Studies also show that medication noncompliance contributes to up to 25% of avoidable hospitalizations among seniors. At Bickford of St. Charles, we take a different approach—one rooted in our Higher Path. Through consistent routines, professional oversight, and strong safety systems, our Health & Wellness teams ensure medications are administered on time, accurately, and with care. Residents are closely monitored for side effects and changes, allowing us to respond quickly and thoughtfully. For families, this means peace of mind. For residents, it means better health, greater stability, and the freedom to live each day without the burden of managing medications alone. That’s the Higher Path—care you can trust, every step of the way. #Higher Path #St. Charles

This weekend we celebrated our butterflies. We made different butterfly craft projects while sharing stories of seeing butterflies where we lived. We then gathered as a group outside and said goodbye to the butterflies as we set them free. One wanted to say a few personal goodbyes before flying off. We all can’t wait to get more caterpillars and do it again.

We had the joy of having Charlie, the St. Charles K-9 comfort dog visit our branch. The residents enjoyed getting to pet Charlie and ask Officer Kramer lots of questions. It was a very happy and educational visit for both our Assisted Living and Mary B's residents. #Bickford of St. Charles #assisted living #memory care
