Montessori at Bickford: Encouraging Independence with Cognitive Ramps
At Bickford, we believe in empowering our residents to maintain their independence as much as possible. One of the ways we do this is through the implementation of cognitive ramps, which are designed to guide residents through our community with ease, offering clear signs and visual cues that help them navigate their surroundings.
Recently, Larry and I took a walk around the branch, carefully assessing and deciding the best placements for these signs, with the goal of making the dining room more accessible for everyone. The idea is simple: by strategically placing signs in key locations and at the right height, we can encourage residents to confidently find their way without needing assistance.
Larry, who has years of experience managing hotels, brought invaluable expertise to this project. His skills in optimizing space and understanding how people interact with their environment were key in making the right decisions for our cognitive ramps. He had a great deal of intel on which locations in the hallways would provide maximum visibility, taking into account angles and sightlines from various points in the building. His input helped ensure that the signs are not only easy to spot, but also clear and welcoming.
This thoughtful approach is just one example of how Montessori principles are incorporated into daily life at Bickford. We’re committed to fostering an environment that promotes autonomy, dignity, and independence. By taking these small, intentional steps, we’re making a big difference in our residents' ability to navigate their home confidently.

A full-circle care team in assisted living creates a seamless, person-centered experience where everyone—from caregivers and nurses to dining, activities, and leadership—works together around each resident. This collaborative approach improves communication, reduces gaps in care, and allows staff to anticipate changes in a resident’s needs more quickly. The result is safer care, more consistent routines, and stronger relationships that build trust with residents and families alike. When the entire team shares responsibility and insight, residents feel truly known, supported, and cared for—physically, emotionally, and socially. Using this approach to care is how residents remain on the Higher Path at Bickford.

In a Montessori community, we don't just provide care, we provide purpose. Whether it's prepping a salad for lunch or mixing up a scrumptious dessert, every task is an opportunity for independence and contribution.
