Moving to assisted living is a big life transition—one that often comes with mixed emotions. While it may bring needed support, safety, and community, some worry it also means giving up independence or personal rights. The truth is, it doesn’t.
At Bickford Assisted Living, we believe that every resident continues to live with purpose, choice, and dignity. Moving into a supportive environment does not mean leaving behind your voice—it means gaining a team that helps you use it.
One beautiful example of this is happening right now in our community. Our Montessori Engagement Coordinator, Deb, is working closely with resident Helen to update her voter registration. It’s a simple task on the surface, but it represents something much bigger: the right to participate, to be heard, and to remain actively engaged in the world around you.
Voting is a fundamental right, and assisted living should never be a barrier to exercising it. Whether it’s helping residents register, request absentee ballots, or get to the polls, these efforts reinforce a powerful message—your opinions still matter.
The Montessori approach we use focuses on honoring each resident’s abilities, preferences, and independence. Supporting Helen in updating her registration isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about empowering her to continue making choices that shape her life and community.
Assisted living is not about losing control—it’s about gaining support where you need it while continuing to live life on your terms. From daily routines to major decisions like voting, residents maintain their rights, their identity, and their voice.
Because no matter where you live, your voice deserves to be heard.

Painting wooden cars, prepping snack, seated exercise and strolls with friends…all in a days work! Why Small Group Activities Work Best for Dementia Care When planning activities for individuals living with dementia, simpler is often better. Large groups, long schedules, and activities that require extended focus can quickly become overwhelming or frustrating. That’s why small group activities with shorter time frames and a variety of options tend to create the most success. Small groups allow for more personal interaction, less distraction, and a calmer environment. Residents are more likely to engage when they feel comfortable and supported rather than lost in a crowd. Staff also have a better opportunity to observe participation, encourage conversation, and adapt the activity based on the group’s energy and abilities. Shorter activities are equally important. Attention spans and energy levels can fluctuate throughout the day for those living with dementia. Planning activities in 15–30 minute increments helps prevent fatigue and frustration while still providing meaningful engagement. Often, ending an activity while residents are still enjoying it leads to a more positive experience overall. Variety also plays a key role. Rotating between music, sensory activities, crafts, reminiscing, movement, games, and social interaction keeps engagement fresh and allows different residents to connect in different ways. What works well one day may not work the next, and flexibility is essential. The goal of dementia programming is not perfection — it is connection, comfort, and moments of joy. Small groups, shorter durations, and varied experiences create opportunities for success while meeting residents where they are each day. #memorycare #higherpath #bickfordofsiouxcity

This weekend, we honor the incredible women who fill our lives with love, laughter, and unwavering support. “Of all the gifts that life has to offer, a loving mother is the greatest of them all.” Whether it’s a hug, a kind word, or just being there, moms make every day brighter. Take a moment this Mother’s Day to say thank you, share a smile, and let the special women in your life know just how much they mean. Here’s to the love that never fades—Happy Mother’s Day! #BickfordofSiouxCity #MemoryCare #AssistedLiving

At Bickford Assisted Living, we know that movement is medicine at every age. Staying active doesn’t mean intense workouts—it simply means finding safe, enjoyable ways to keep your body moving each day. Whether it’s a morning stretch, a walk down the hallway, chair yoga, dancing to a favorite song, or gentle strength exercises, every movement matters. Our team is here to provide encouragement and assistance so residents can move confidently and comfortably. We help with balance support, guided exercises, mobility assistance, and adapting activities to meet each person’s abilities. The goal is not perfection—it’s progress, confidence, and feeling good. Regular movement can improve strength, flexibility, circulation, mood, and independence. It can also bring smiles, laughter, and connection when done together with friends. This May, we celebrate the joy of movement and the power of staying active together. No matter your pace, every step counts. #BickfordAssistedLiving #SeniorWellness #HealthyAging #MoveYourBody #AssistedLivingLife

At Bickford Memory Care Sharon and Mary lead the way to taking the first sip at our new coffee station. Bickford is always looking for meaningful ways to bring to enhance comfort, connection and daily joy for our residents. That's why we're excited to introduce our new coffee-hydration station. This is a welcoming space for residents and their families to socialize with freshly brewed coffee and hydration options. Moments like these remind us of it's the little things that creates happiness. We're so grateful to Sharon and Mary for being our pioneers, and we look forward to many more residents enjoying this special new space in the days ahead. Celebrating Connection: The Heart of Life Enrichment There’s something special about watching creativity come alive in a room full of laughter, shared stories, and bright colors. Our Life Enrichment Program is built around moments just like these—moments where older adults can express themselves, stay engaged, and feel deeply connected to their community. From daily activities and themed events to outings and family gatherings, every experience is designed to spark joy and support well‑being. Whether it’s painting a familiar landmark, joining a group discussion, or simply enjoying time with friends, these activities help residents stay active, social, and fulfilled. Life enrichment isn’t just a program—it’s a philosophy. It’s about honoring each person’s interests, encouraging creativity, and creating opportunities for meaningful connection every single day.
