Why Small Group Activities Work Best for Dementia Care
When planning activities for individuals living with dementia, simpler is often better. Large groups, long schedules, and activities that require extended focus can quickly become overwhelming or frustrating. That’s why small group activities with shorter time frames and a variety of options tend to create the most success.
Small groups allow for more personal interaction, less distraction, and a calmer environment. Residents are more likely to engage when they feel comfortable and supported rather than lost in a crowd. Staff also have a better opportunity to observe participation, encourage conversation, and adapt the activity based on the group’s energy and abilities.
Shorter activities are equally important. Attention spans and energy levels can fluctuate throughout the day for those living with dementia. Planning activities in 15–30 minute increments helps prevent fatigue and frustration while still providing meaningful engagement. Often, ending an activity while residents are still enjoying it leads to a more positive experience overall.
Variety also plays a key role. Rotating between music, sensory activities, crafts, reminiscing, movement, games, and social interaction keeps engagement fresh and allows different residents to connect in different ways. What works well one day may not work the next, and flexibility is essential.
The goal of dementia programming is not perfection — it is connection, comfort, and moments of joy. Small groups, shorter durations, and varied experiences create opportunities for success while meeting residents where they are each day.

A Splash of Fun: Our Resident Painting Party This week, creativity was in full bloom at our resident painting party! Residents came together to unwind, socialize, and most importantly—paint whatever their hearts desired. The atmosphere was full of laughter, music, and the delightful smell of fresh paint. The variety of colors, styles, and ideas on display was truly inspiring. What made the event extra special was the freedom to create without rules. No pressure, no expectations—just pure fun. It was a joy to see neighbors encouraging each other, sharing tips, and admiring each other’s masterpieces. By the end of the afternoon, the room was filled with colorful canvases and even brighter smiles. Our painting party reminded us that sometimes, the best way to connect and unwind is to simply pick up a brush, let your imagination run wild, and have a good time. #bickfordofsiouxcity #montessori #memorycare #creativepainting

The Celebrations Committee did a fabulous job creating a diaper cake for our caregiver, Lourdes, today. We share in her excitement as she prepares for this wonderful blessing. #bickfordofsiouxcity #montessori #memorycare

At this month’s Food Council Meeting, our residents took the lead Montessori-style by sharing ideas, preferences, and meaningful memories connected to food. We discussed favorite comfort foods, beloved fruits and vegetables, and special meals residents would like to enjoy more often. The conversation sparked wonderful storytelling and connection as residents talked about recipes that remind them of home and family traditions. One exciting idea that came from the meeting was planning a community cookout where residents can help choose the menu and even bring in their favorite comfort food recipes to make together. Providing opportunities for residents to lead discussions and make choices encourages purpose, independence, and engagement — all important parts of the Montessori approach in senior living. Food is more than nourishment; it brings comfort, memories, and community. We are looking forward to future cooking activities, sharing favorite dishes, and creating meaningful moments together around the table. #BickfordOfSiouxCity #MontessoriInspiredLifestyle #ComfortFood #SeniorLiving #AssistedLiving #MeaningfulEngagement #CommunityConnections

Balloon volleyball is an excellent form of exercise for older adults because it is gentle on the joints while still encouraging movement, coordination, and social interaction. Players stay active by reaching, stretching, and moving to keep the balloon in the air, which can help improve balance, flexibility, and reaction time. Since the balloon moves slowly and is lightweight, the activity is safe and less intimidating than traditional sports, making it suitable for people with different fitness levels. In addition to the physical benefits, balloon volleyball also promotes laughter, teamwork, and mental engagement, which can support emotional well-being and reduce feelings of isolation among elderly participants. Daily exercise keeps our residents on the Higher Path. #bickfordofsiouxcity #memorycare #higherpath

This weekend, we honor the incredible women who fill our lives with love, laughter, and unwavering support. “Of all the gifts that life has to offer, a loving mother is the greatest of them all.” Whether it’s a hug, a kind word, or just being there, moms make every day brighter. Take a moment this Mother’s Day to say thank you, share a smile, and let the special women in your life know just how much they mean. Here’s to the love that never fades—Happy Mother’s Day! #BickfordofSiouxCity #MemoryCare #AssistedLiving
