Imagination Travel: Exploring the World Without Leaving the Room
What if you could travel the world with your friends—no flights, no packing, no expense—just imagination? That’s exactly what we set out to do, and it turned into one of the most fun and inspiring group experiences we’ve had.
The idea was simple: each person would choose a destination anywhere on the globe and share it with the group. But there was one important rule—you had to explain why you picked that place. Not just where you’d go, but what drew you there, what you’d hope to experience, and what made it meaningful to you.
As we went around the room, the world unfolded in the most unexpected ways.
Some people chose places rich in history, dreaming of walking through ancient streets and standing where centuries of stories have unfolded. Others were drawn to vibrant cities, full of culture, food, and energy. A few picked peaceful, faraway destinations—quiet beaches, mountain villages, and hidden gems that offered escape and reflection.
What made it truly special wasn’t just the destinations themselves—it was the personal connection behind each choice. We learned about each other’s interests, dreams, and even a few lifelong wishes we hadn’t shared before. A place became more than a dot on a map; it became a story, a feeling, a glimpse into someone’s heart.
By the end, something unexpected had happened: our bucket lists had grown. A lot. Places we hadn’t considered before were suddenly at the top, simply because someone shared their passion for them.
This simple activity reminded us that travel is more than just movement—it’s curiosity, connection, and imagination. Even without leaving the room, we explored the world together.
And maybe that’s the best part: sometimes, the journey begins with a story.

We spent a rainy Saturday afternoon being creative painting rocks to look like Cactus and placing them in flower pots they were very cute when we were done. Fun times at Bickford!

Moving to assisted living is a big life transition—one that often comes with mixed emotions. While it may bring needed support, safety, and community, some worry it also means giving up independence or personal rights. The truth is, it doesn’t. At Bickford Assisted Living, we believe that every resident continues to live with purpose, choice, and dignity. Moving into a supportive environment does not mean leaving behind your voice—it means gaining a team that helps you use it. One beautiful example of this is happening right now in our community. Our Montessori Engagement Coordinator, Deb, is working closely with resident Helen to update her voter registration. It’s a simple task on the surface, but it represents something much bigger: the right to participate, to be heard, and to remain actively engaged in the world around you. Voting is a fundamental right, and assisted living should never be a barrier to exercising it. Whether it’s helping residents register, request absentee ballots, or get to the polls, these efforts reinforce a powerful message—your opinions still matter. The Montessori approach we use focuses on honoring each resident’s abilities, preferences, and independence. Supporting Helen in updating her registration isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about empowering her to continue making choices that shape her life and community. Assisted living is not about losing control—it’s about gaining support where you need it while continuing to live life on your terms. From daily routines to major decisions like voting, residents maintain their rights, their identity, and their voice. Because no matter where you live, your voice deserves to be heard. #BickfordAssistedLiving #SeniorLiving #BickfordOfSiouxCity #VoterRights

Why Volunteers Make Assisted Living Activities Better Volunteers bring a special kind of energy to assisted living communities. Their presence adds warmth, variety, and connection that enrich daily life for residents and support the staff who care for the residents. Fresh Faces, Real Connection Volunteers introduce new stories, personalities, and conversations. These interactions help reduce loneliness and encourage residents to stay socially engaged. More Creative, Diverse Activities Many volunteers bring unique talents—music, crafts, gardening, tech skills—that expand what your activity program can offer without adding strain to staff. Stronger Community Ties When local schools, clubs, and organizations get involved, residents feel more connected to the world beyond the building. It reinforces that they are valued members of the community. A Sense of Purpose Volunteers don’t just help—they collaborate. Residents often share their own skills and experiences, creating meaningful two‑way relationships. Extra Support for Staff From escorting residents to helping with events, volunteers lighten the load. This allows staff to focus on personalized care and high‑quality programming. Volunteers don’t just fill time—they fill the community with joy, connection, and purpose. If you want, I can also create a social‑media‑ready version or a call‑to‑action to recruit volunteers. Thank you to the Beta Alpha Psi from USD for hosting Bingo night! We had a great time! #assistedliving #higherpath #USD #higherpath

Our friend Iris volunteered today and taught us a fun new game. We love learning new things. Mary was busy helping make a salad for supper tonight. It is important to keep doing things that make a difference! Always busy at Bickford!
