Your loved one deserves to live the best life possible

Watch your loved one thrive in an environment that feels like home

Navigating the aging journey is difficult.

We understand what’s at stake here: it’s not just someone, it’s your loved one.

Meanwhile, it’s on you to make the difficult decisions.

There's a Higher Path for our seniors

Senior care today is reactive, expensive, and siloed. It’s a sick-care system, not a health-care system (designed to keep seniors healthy). Most of us have accepted this status quo because it feels too big and complex to change. Not us. We’re taking the road less traveled and championing a higher standard of senior care.

Ron Lubbers was in the house today. Always love the music he plays and of course his lovely wife Sue Ellen takes requests. #BickfordofClinton

Knitting is a highly effective, low-impact activity that stimulates multiple brain networks and fine-tunes motor skills. The rhythmic motions and requirement for pattern-tracking actively build new neural pathways, helping seniors maintain cognitive sharpness, improve dexterity, and reduce the risk of memory loss. Benefits for Dexterity & Brain Health • Enhanced Motor Skills: The precise, repetitive manipulation of knitting needles and yarn keeps finger joints active, which helps relieve arthritis symptoms and improves hand-eye coordination. • Cognitive Reserve: Studies from the AARP reveal that crafting activities can lower the risk of cognitive impairment by up to 50%. • Neuroplasticity: Learning new stitches and complex patterns forces the brain to create fresh neural connections, which promotes brain resilience and combats decline. • Stress Reduction: The calm, repetitive actions act as a form of mindfulness, lowering blood pressure, distracting from chronic pain, and relieving anxiety. #BickfordofClinton #HigherPath

This afternoon we did a group activity that everyone enjoyed. It was called Faces and Places. A picture of either a person or a place and everyone was given enough time think before they gave an answer. I must say it really sparked their knowledge and memory. #BickfordofClinton

Our gardening club is in full swing. Took a few to Home Depot today to pick out vegetables plants, flower plants and a couple of packs of seeds. We planted part of the plants they picked out, but will finish up on Monday. Thank you to our volunteer Chuck who assisted us on our trip today. More pictures to come! #BickfordofClinton

Yesterday we took a bus trip to a local area, Camanche Iowa, Sandy who lives there was our tour guide. We drove by her place amongst others. We ran into Sharon, a Bickford family friend. Sharon told us if she knew we were coming she'd baked a cake. #BickfordofClinton

Today we had double the fun. We started off playing a group game called big word or words to make as many smaller words as we could. This game really gets the brain thinking. Then Rebecca from #Compassus Hospice came in to make us a sweet treat of ice-cream sundaes. While we enjoyed these yummy sundaes we continued to come up with words. Karen stepped into write down the words we came up with. As a group we came up with 131 word's. Yeah team #BickfordofClinton

Mental health concerns affect 20% of older adults aged 55 and older, with depression and anxiety ranking as the most prevalent conditions. Despite high numbers, nearly two-thirds of seniors do not receive the mental health care services they require. Unique Stressors in Later Life • Social Isolation: Loneliness affects roughly one-quarter of the elderly, serving as a primary driver for depression. • Physical Decline: Managing chronic pain, cognitive decline, or a loss of independence directly impacts emotional health. • Grief and Bereavement: Coping with the recurring loss of spouses, friends, and peers triggers prolonged distress. • The Myth of Normalcy: Seniors and caregivers frequently dismiss severe mood changes as a "normal" byproduct of aging. Common Warning Signs • Noticeable shifts in mood, energy levels, or appetite • Social withdrawal or avoiding routine hobbies • Unexplained physical ailments, such as persistent headaches or digestive issues • Misuse of prescription medications or alcohol Interventions and Solutions 1. Social Connectivity: Combat isolation via community centers, volunteer programs, and intergenerational activities. 2. Physical and Mental Fitness: Low-impact exercise (like walking) paired with brain games keeps cognitive pathways active. 3. Caregiver Training: Educating family members helps them identify subtle mental health warning signs early. #BickfordofClinton #HigherPath

Today we took a little lunch adventure to a little bar and grill. Hamburger basket and fries for $4. You can not pass up a good deal like that. The food was good and chatter even better. Thank you Julie for coming along. You are such a special volunteer and we appreciate you more than we can ever say ❤️ #BickfordofClinton
