Keeping Minds and Bodies Active: How Ring Toss Boosts Hand-Eye Coordination at Bickford Senior Living
At Bickford Senior Living, we believe that joy and wellness go hand in hand — quite literally! One of our favorite activities that blends fun, social connection, and physical benefits is the classic game of ring toss. While it may seem like a simple pastime, this engaging game offers powerful benefits for our residents, especially when it comes to maintaining and improving hand-eye coordination.
Why Hand-Eye Coordination Matters
Hand-eye coordination is the ability to process visual information and guide our hands to complete a task. For seniors, keeping this skill sharp can help with everyday activities like pouring a cup of tea, buttoning a shirt, or writing a note to a loved one. It also supports balance, reaction time, and overall confidence in movement.
The Benefits of Ring Toss for Seniors
Gentle Physical Activity – Tossing rings encourages arm movement, grip strength, and posture without putting strain on joints.
Cognitive Engagement – Players must focus on the target, judge distance, and adjust their throw — all of which stimulate the brain.
Social Connection – Whether cheering each other on or sharing a laugh over a tricky throw, ring toss fosters camaraderie and joy.
Adaptability – The game can be played seated or standing, indoors or outdoors, making it accessible for residents with varying mobility levels.
A Game That Brings Smiles
During our recent ring toss afternoon, the room was filled with laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of applause. Residents celebrated each other’s successes, and even those who were hesitant at first found themselves joining in. The simple act of aiming for a peg became a moment of shared accomplishment.
At Bickford, we know that wellness is about more than exercise — it’s about creating moments that make life brighter. Ring toss is just one of the many ways we keep our residents active, engaged, and connected.
Because here, every toss is a step toward a healthier, happier day.

One of the things we hear most from families is: “We wish we had started looking sooner. “ The truth is, assisted living decisions are often made during a stressful moment-after a fall, illness, or hospital stay. But planning ahead can make all the difference. We all start with the same promise: I will take care of her myself. But health issues have a way of changing the rules. What started as simple plan of action , turns into a 24 seven vigilance. You’re no longer just a daughter or son; you’ve become a nurse, a security guard, chauffeur and a chef. . If you feel frustrated, exhausted, or even angry, you aren’t failing- you’re simply at the end of what one person can humanly do. At Bickford Senior Living of Marshalltown, joining our waitlist, doesn’t mean you have to move right away. It simply gives your family options and peace of mind if the need of arises. Sometimes the best gift we can give our loved ones is a plan. If assisted living has crossed your mind for someone you love, we’d love to meet you! Schedule a tour and ask about our waitlist today. 641-354-5996

Staying Sharp & Social: The Joy of Playing Ball Darts at Bickford Senior Living At Bickford Senior Living, we believe that staying active isn’t just about movement—it’s about joy, connection, and keeping the mind engaged. One of our favorite activities that checks all those boxes is ball darts—a safe, low-impact twist on the classic game of darts that’s perfect for all ability levels. What is Ball Darts? Instead of sharp-tipped darts, ball darts uses soft, Velcro-covered balls that stick to a fabric dartboard. This makes the game completely safe while still offering the fun and challenge of aiming for the bullseye. It’s easy to learn, adaptable for seated or standing play, and can be enjoyed solo or in friendly competition. Why Our Residents Love It Gentle on the Body – No heavy lifting or strenuous movement, making it ideal for seniors with mobility concerns. Boosts Mental Sharpness – Aiming and scoring keep the brain active, improving focus and hand-eye coordination. Encourages Social Connection – Whether it’s cheering on a neighbor or sharing a laugh over a close match, ball darts brings people together. A Game for Everyone We’ve seen residents light up when they hit their target, and even more so when they share the moment with friends. Ball darts is more than just a game—it’s a way to stay engaged, celebrate small victories, and enjoy the simple pleasure of play. At Bickford, we know that meaningful activities are the heart of a vibrant community. Ball darts is just one of the many ways we help residents stay active, connected, and smiling every day. #Bickfordseniorliving #CARD #Memorycare #Montessori

Western Day at Bickford Senior Living: A Pearl Passion Celebration to Remember At Bickford Senior Living, we believe every day is an opportunity to create joy, connection, and cherished memories. This year’s Western Day—part of our beloved Pearl Passion series—was a heartwarming reminder of how laughter, friendship, and a little cowboy spirit can brighten our community. From the moment residents stepped into our festively decorated space, the atmosphere was alive with the charm of the Old West. Cowboy hats, bandanas, and boots set the tone, while country tunes and the scent of fresh-baked cornbread filled the air. Of course, no Western celebration would be complete without a hearty meal. Our culinary team served up a delicious spread of BBQ favorites. But beyond the fun and festivities, Western Day was about something deeper: honoring the spirit of togetherness that defines our Bickford family. Whether it was sharing stories over lunch, cheering each other on during games, or simply enjoying the sunshine, the day was filled with moments that will be treasured for years to come. As part of our Pearl Passion events, Western Day reminded us that joy is timeless, and community is the heart of everything we do. Here’s to many more celebrations that keep our residents smiling and our hearts full. #Bickfordseniorliving #CARD #Memorycare #Montessori
