Meet Lincoln's Newest Bickford Family Member, Kayla Manley, joining us as Activities Director--
Hello, everyone, my name is Kayla! I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, and for the past 14 years, I’ve built my career in informal education and nonprofit work that truly matters to me. I spent nine of those years working directly with youth ages 2–18, creating engaging, supportive spaces where young people could learn, grow, and feel seen. Over the last five years, my focus shifted to supporting my team more behind the scenes—coaching, mentoring, and encouraging staff as they grew into confident, capable professionals.
I am excited to step into the role of Montessori Engagement, as it feels both meaningful and full-circle. My passion for connection, compassion, and lifelong learning was shaped early on through a close relationship with my grandparents. They taught me the importance of being a steady, loving light—especially in moments that aren’t always easy.
I bring warmth, energy, and a genuine love for people into everything I do, and I look forward to sharing my smile and my talents with the Bickford Family! If you see me while you are here, please say “Hello”!
-Kayla

Arm Chair Travel: Passport Optional! Who says you need a plane ticket to explore the world? Today, we packed our (imaginary) bags and set off on an unforgettable adventure deep into the Amazon Rainforest — all from the comfort of our favorite chairs! Around here, we like to call it *Arm Chair Travel*, where curiosity leads the way and the only thing you need is a sense of wonder. Through a fascinating documentary, we journeyed into one of the most vibrant and mysterious ecosystems on the planet. From colorful birds soaring through the canopy to creatures that prefer to stay hidden beneath the leaves, every scene sparked conversation, surprise, and plenty of “Did you see that?!” moments. We learned about exotic plants, unique wildlife, and the incredible balance that keeps the rainforest thriving. Lifelong learning doesn’t have to mean textbooks or classrooms. Sometimes, it’s as simple as exploring new places, discovering fun facts, and sharing the excitement of experiencing something new together. Activities like Arm Chair Travel remind us that adventure never has to stop — it just might look a little different. The best part? We earned our rainforest “passport stamps” without the long flights, heavy luggage, or travel expenses. Not a bad way to see the world if you ask us! We’re already wondering where our next adventure will take us!

What makes Bickford different is the HigherPath Care Model. HigherPath works because it refuses to accept that aging automatically means decline. Instead of waiting for falls, hospitalizations, or sudden changes and reacting afterward, this model focuses on prevention, coordination, and early action. It’s about catching the subtle things. A slight change in appetite. A shift in mobility. A difference in mood. When those things are noticed early and addressed intentionally, outcomes change. Residents stay stronger. They stay more independent. They stay more stable. HigherPath is not task-driven care. It’s purpose-driven care. It brings together communication, proactive monitoring, and collaboration so small concerns don’t become major setbacks. It supports the whole person, physically, emotionally, and socially. That’s why we believe in it. Because when care is intentional and preventative, seniors don’t just live longer. They live better. #HigherPath #BickfordSeniorLiving #SeniorLivingDoneRight #ProactiveCare #AgingWell #ResidentCentered #QualityOfLife #SeniorCareInnovation

Soaking Up Sunshine & Planting New Beginnings There’s something special about the first warm, sunny day that call us outdoors and invite us to get our hands a little dirty. Yesterday at Bickford of Lincoln, we fully embraced that feeling by spending time outside preparing and planting seeds for our upcoming garden! Gardening is more than just a seasonal activity — it’s an experience that engages the senses and sparks meaningful moments. The feel of soil between your fingers, the smell of fresh earth, and the simple act of planting seeds can bring back treasured memories of past gardens, family traditions, and time spent outdoors. These small moments often open the door to storytelling, laughter, and shared experiences. Beyond the joy of reminiscing, gardening offers a wonderful way to stay active, enjoy fresh air, and build connections with one another. Working side-by-side, residents shared tips, encouraged each other, and talked about the excitement of watching something beautiful grow together. Now, as our seeds settle into their new home, we look forward to nurturing them in the weeks ahead — a reminder that with a little sunshine, care, and community, wonderful things can flourish!

Quiet moments matter. These everyday scenes—relaxing on the couch, sitting comfortably, staying warm with a blanket—are part of how we support comfort and familiarity in our Mary B's memory support neighborhood. We’re always happy to offer tours to those who’d like to learn more.

Balloons, Laughter, and Bright Moments: The Joy of Physical Activity in Dementia Support Today’s activity was simple, colorful, and filled with laughter — balloon tennis! Armed with makeshift rackets and bright, floating balloons, we transformed an ordinary space into a lively “court” where smiles and friendly competition took center stage. Physical activity plays a vital role in supporting people living with dementia. Gentle movement helps maintain mobility, coordination, and overall health. More importantly, activities like balloon tennis create opportunities for connection, confidence, and pure enjoyment. The slow, unpredictable float of a balloon gives everyone a chance to participate, succeed, and share in the fun, regardless of ability. What made today especially meaningful was seeing moments of joy light up the room. There were cheers for impressive volleys, giggles when the balloon drifted off course, and warm encouragement shared between participants. These moments remind us that physical activity isn’t just about exercise — it’s about nurturing wellbeing, social connection, and creating positive experiences. Sometimes, the simplest activities bring the greatest happiness. Today, one balloon carried countless smiles, and that’s a win for everyone involved.

When you feel good about how you look, it shows in your smile, your energy, and the way you approach each day. That’s why our residents love visiting our on-site Bee Hive Salon — a welcoming space where a fresh haircut, style, or little pampering helps them feel refreshed, confident, and truly themselves. HigherPath works because it flips the script on traditional senior living. Instead of waiting for falls, hospitalizations, or health declines and then reacting, this model focuses on preventing those things in the first place. It’s proactive, intentional, and rooted in the belief that aging does not automatically mean decline. What makes it powerful is the coordination. Care teams are aligned. Communication is consistent. Small changes are caught early. Residents are supported holistically, physically, emotionally, and socially, rather than being treated as a list of diagnoses. When care is delivered this way, seniors stay stronger, safer, and more independent for longer. I’ve seen firsthand how proactive monitoring, early intervention, and real collaboration reduce unnecessary hospital visits and improve quality of life. HigherPath isn’t about doing more tasks, it’s about doing the right things at the right time with purpose. Senior living works best when leadership is present, care is intentional, and residents are truly known. That’s what HigherPath is built on, and that’s why it works. Aging well is possible when the system is designed to support it. #HigherPath #BickfordSeniorLiving #SeniorLivingDoneRight #ProactiveCare #AgingWell #HealthcareLeadership #ResidentCenteredCare #WellnessFocused #QualityOfLife #SeniorCareInnovation
