** Resident Success Story: Finding Purpose on the #HigherPath **
When Gene first moved into Bickford of Burlington, the transition wasn’t easy. It was a big life change—different, unfamiliar, and not something he wanted at the time. He was unhappy about the move, often trying to leave and preferring to do everything on his own.
But through the calm and caring nature of our BFM team, the dedication of our nursing staff, and the support from our care partners at Curana Health, we slowly began to understand Gene’s needs. With time, conversation, and consistency, we were able to help regulate his medications, create a comfortable routine, and most importantly—find what gave Gene purpose.
That purpose came to life outdoors. Gene began spending time with our Maintenance Director, Mark, helping in the garden, clearing the porch, pulling weeds, and taking on all kinds of little projects around the branch. It wasn’t long before Gene also became a regular at our weekly Men’s Club, where he found friendship and community among his fellow residents.
Today, Gene is one of the most recognizable faces in our branch—always smiling, offering advice, and lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed. His story reminds us that it’s never too late to find your purpose, and that with compassion, patience, and teamwork, every resident can find their place on the #HigherPath.
We’re so thankful that Gene and his family chose to call Bickford home. We truly couldn’t imagine life here without him. <3

A creative start to the season Our residents recently spent some time making their own gingerbread men, and it was great to see how focused and engaged they were. Everyone approached their designs in their own way, adding small details and personal touches as they worked. It was nice to see their smiles and the sense of accomplishment as they created something they could decorate and make their own. We look forward to more moments like these. #gingerbreadmen #decoratingfun

National Homemade Bread Day was a TOTAL HIT at Bickford of Burlington! Yesterday, our Baking Club got a little wild… and a whole lot sweet. We rolled up our sleeves, grabbed our bowls, and whipped up something most people don’t even know exists… ICE CREAM BREAD! Yes—bread. Made from ice cream. And yes—it’s as magical as it sounds. Our residents had fun mixing, stirring, laughing, and sprinkling a whole bunch of extra “love” into two delicious flavors: Vanilla + Dried Cranberries + A splash of vanilla Vanilla + Chocolate Chips (because chocolate chips make everything better!) Our residents also voted on our favorite flavor… but it ended in a tie! Team Cranberry vs. Team Chocolate Chip. (Both teams celebrated. It was a day full of fun, creativity, and tasty surprises—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Here’s to more sweet adventures with our amazing residents! #bakingclub #nationalhomemadebreadday #icecreambread

As lights go up and our community fills with holiday cheer, we’re reminded how meaningful small acts of kindness can be. This year, we’re collecting comfort items for our local hospice house—simple gifts that bring warmth, dignity, and love to those spending the holidays in care. If you want to donate any items listed below, please drop them off at Bickford or contact Dakota at 319-371-7572 and she can pick up as well! All donations will go directly to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

A Beautiful Fall Morning Adventure! Yesterday, we took our residents out for a lovely fall morning drive to Fort Madison! The crisp air, fall trees, and sunshine made it the perfect day to get out and enjoy the beauty of the season. While we waited for the train to pass along the riverfront, we took a little drive around town — soaking in the sight of fluffy clouds, the river gently flowing, and geese sunbathing along the shore. The best part? Listening to our residents reminisce about the old Catfish Bend Casino boat — sharing stories of dinners on board and trying their luck at the slot machines! It was a morning full of laughter, memories, and the simple joys of fall. #bickfordadventures #falldrive #riverfront

Honoring Our Heroes at Bickford of Burlington We had the privilege of celebrating the incredible Veterans who call Bickford home! We started the day by taking our heroes out for a delicious breakfast treat at Perkins, followed by a special craft activity where a few of our lovely ladies created heartfelt “Thank You” cards for our veterans. Yesterday afternoon, during our Ice Cream Sundae Social, we presented these cards and hosted a touching ceremony. Our Activity Coordinator shared a speech, and each Veteran received a certificate in recognition of their service to our country. It was a beautiful day filled with gratitude, laughter, and reflection. To all who have served — we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your courage, sacrifice, and dedication. You are the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have today. Happy Veterans Day from all of us at Bickford of Burlington! #veteransday #bickfordofburlington #honoringourheroes #thankyouveterans
