Bickford of Crown Point

Your loved one deserves to live the best life possible

Watch your loved one thrive in an environment that feels like home

Navigating the aging journey is difficult.

We understand what’s at stake here: it’s not just someone, it’s your loved one.

Meanwhile, it’s on you to make the difficult decisions.

There's a Higher Path for our seniors

Senior care today is reactive, expensive, and siloed. It’s a sick-care system, not a health-care system (designed to keep seniors healthy). Most of us have accepted this status quo because it feels too big and complex to change. Not us. We’re taking the road less traveled and championing a higher standard of senior care.

When Love Feels Like Guilt: Why Timing Matters in Memory Care Decisions Making the decision to transition a loved one into memory care is one of the most emotional journeys a family can face. For many, it’s not just a practical decision but deeply personal. It’s layered with love, responsibility, and often… guilt. If you’ve ever thought: “Am I giving up on them?” “Could I have done more?” “Is it too soon?” You’re not alone. In fact, research shows that over half of caregivers report feeling guilt when moving a loved one into a care community. [aarp.org] But what many families don’t realize is this: The real risk often isn’t moving too soon generally it’s waiting too long. Understanding the Guilt: It Comes From Love, Not Failure Guilt is one of the most common emotions families experience during this transition. It can show up in many ways: Feeling like you’re abandoning your loved one Grieving the life they once had Questioning whether you’ve done enough Even feeling guilty for experiencing moments of relief These emotions are normal. They don’t mean you’ve made the wrong decision. In fact, experts emphasize that guilt and grief often occur together because families are adjusting to a major life change and loss of routine, not failing in their role as caregivers. [caregiversns.org] It’s important to remember: Choosing additional support doesn’t mean you love them less—it often means you recognize they need more than one person can safely provide. The Hidden Cost of Waiting “Just a Little Longer” Many families delay memory care because it feels like the compassionate thing to do. They tell themselves: “They’re doing okay for now.” “Let’s give it a little more time.” “We’re not ready yet.” But situations can change quickly. 1. Decisions Often Become Crisis-Driven Waiting often leads to transitions happening after: A fall A hospitalization A medical emergency When that happens, families are forced to act quickly without time to explore options or prepare emotionally. [asburyheights.org] Instead of making a thoughtful choice, the decision is made under pressure. 2. Health and Safety Risks Increase Over Time Without consistent care and supervision, small challenges can quietly become serious issues: Missed medications Poor nutrition Undetected medical conditions Increased risk of falls and injuries These are not uncommon. As needs increase, living at home without adequate support can become unsafe faster than families anticipate. [heathwooda...living.com] 3. Independence and Dignity Can Be Lost One of the most overlooked consequences of waiting is the loss of choice. When families move forward early, their loved one can: Be part of the decision Tour communities Help choose their new space Adjust gradually But when the move happens after a crisis, that opportunity is often gone. Instead, transitions may happen suddenly, sometimes after a hospital stay, leaving individuals feeling confused, powerless, or even resentful. [yourkeytos...ptions.com] 4. Emotional Strain Builds on the Entire Family Caregiving can slowly become overwhelming. Many families don’t realize how much stress they’ve been carrying until support is in place. It’s also common to feel both relief and guilt at the same time—and that emotional mix can be confusing. [health.usnews.com] But relief doesn’t mean you didn’t care. It often means the situation had become unsustainable. A Different Way to Look at the Decision Choosing memory care isn’t about giving something up. It’s about: Safety – consistent monitoring and support Health – proactive care and early intervention Connection – social engagement and structured activities Peace of mind – for both your loved one and your family It also allows you to return to your most important role; being a spouse, son, or daughter again… not just a caregiver. Planning Ahead Creates Better Outcomes Families who plan ahead often experience: More control over the decision More time to explore options A smoother emotional transition Better overall outcomes for their loved one They aren’t reacting, they’re preparing with intention and care. You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone If you’re in the middle of this decision, or even just beginning to think about it, I want you to know something: There is no “perfect” timing. There is only thoughtful timing. And you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Whenever you feel ready, I’m here to listen, answer questions, and help you walk through your options—at your pace, without pressure. Repurposing is always a fulfilling way to spend one’s time, especially if it involves helping someone out. We, at Bickford of Crown Point were offered large garden pots that were ready for recycling, but were actually the ideal size for a bedroom waste can. Kind of boring, so the residents in Mary B’s “enhanced” them using tape, sponges, and paint. Practicing the Montessori principles and breaking down this task into simple steps made it enjoyable for the residents and staff, plus we created a decorative but functional item for the next new resident’s room.

The gardening spree continues in Mary B’s, where planting of the remaining tomatoes and peppers took place. We had one willing participant ready to roll, with the others choosing to relax and watch. It’s all good, as having a choice creates a balanced environment where all residents thrive. That’s Montessori Living y’all!

The Bickford of Crown Point garden is finally complete! After planting tomato, pepper, cucumber, zucchini, strawberry, basil, and thyme in the hot, but glorious sunshine, we were ready for a break. But since the soil was so dry from a lack of rain, we powered through to finish quenching the thirst of the dehydrated dirt. Now it’s up to mother nature to nurture and enrich the plants to produce! Many thanks to Jo Jo for helping out, and practicing the Montessori principles.

It’s time to get our hands dirty at Bickford of Crown Point! After taking our residents out to the garden center to choose veggies and herbs, we moved on to clearing out the ivy coated home for our healthy plants. It took a minute, but after a little elbow grease, the area is now cleared and ready for the new inhabitants!

Rounding up a group of Bickford of Crown Point residents to take a bus ride to the local garden center at the spur of the moment worked out perfectly. This was one of those moments where everyone was injected with energy by the sunny weather and motivated to choose some vegetable plants for their garden. There was some disagreements about what was best, but in the end, the choices made were appropriate. The important aspect was that the residents themselves made the choices, which falls within the guidelines of Montessori Inspired Living. Now, on to the next step of planting them. Stay tuned!

When one of our newest residents asked how she could contribute to her community here at Bickford of Crown Point, watering our porch plants came to mind! June, who will be 95 years young on May 30, is quite active and a perfect candidate for this task. Although it seems like a simple exercise, accomplishing it actually captures many of the 12 key Montessori principles Bickford employs, leaving those that involve themselves feeling more fulfilled and accomplished. Thanks for your service June!

My husband is getting exceptional care there. His needs are met promptly and professionally. The staff members truly care about him. I don't worry about him because I know that he is being well cared for. It is also a beautiful facility while still maintaining a homey atmosphere.
