Bickford of Davenport

Your loved one deserves to live the best life possible

Watch your loved one thrive in an environment that feels like home

Navigating the aging journey is difficult.

We understand what’s at stake here: it’s not just someone, it’s your loved one.

Meanwhile, it’s on you to make the difficult decisions.

There's a Higher Path for our seniors

Senior care today is reactive, expensive, and siloed. It’s a sick-care system, not a health-care system (designed to keep seniors healthy). Most of us have accepted this status quo because it feels too big and complex to change. Not us. We’re taking the road less traveled and championing a higher standard of senior care.

Oral care is a small task that makes a big difference in overall health and comfort. A clean, healthy mouth supports eating, speaking, and confidence—and it also helps prevent more serious health concerns. Many residents need reminders or hands-on assistance with daily oral hygiene. Conditions such as arthritis, memory loss, stroke, or general weakness can make brushing and flossing difficult. By offering gentle support, caregivers help maintain not only oral health but also dignity and quality of life. Good oral care helps reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, mouth infections, and bad breath. It can also lower the chance of complications such as poor nutrition or discomfort while eating. For residents with dentures, daily cleaning and proper storage are just as important as natural tooth care. Caregivers should approach oral care with patience and respect. Explaining each step, using a calm tone, and allowing residents to participate as much as they can helps build trust. Simple routines—brushing twice daily, cleaning dentures, and checking the mouth for sores or redness—can prevent problems before they start. In assisted nursing, oral care is more than a hygiene task; it’s an essential part of whole-person care. Taking a few extra minutes each day can greatly improve a resident’s comfort, health, and smile.

Winter Fun at Our Community! We brought the snow inside today with a lively snowball fight that had everyone laughing and cheering! Afterward, residents tried their luck at our Spin the Bow game to win fun prizes, and we wrapped up the day by getting creative with making edible snowmen—almost too cute to eat! Moments like these remind us that winter is best enjoyed together, with plenty of smiles, laughter, and a little sweetness along the way.

What a joyful day in our community! We kicked things off with an energetic drumline performance that had everyone smiling and tapping along. Christina, and special “drummers” Aviana, Chris, and Michelle all stepped in to keep the beat going. This afternoon was filled with bingo fun complete with laughter and friendly competition. We ended the day on the sweetest note—making Christmas cookies with Chris and welcoming special guests, Christmas carolers from Christ’s Family Church! Days like these remind us how meaningful togetherness, music, and tradition are for our residents.

Home Is Still Where the Heart Is As an assisted living nurse, I see many kinds of strength every day—but one of the quietest and most powerful is the bond between our residents and their families. The holidays have a special way of bringing that bond to the surface. For many loved ones in assisted living, the season can stir memories of bustling kitchens, familiar traditions, and voices around the table. While circumstances may look different now, connection still matters just as much—if not more. A visit, a phone call, a handwritten card, or even a short video chat can light up a resident’s entire day. I’ve watched eyes brighten and posture straighten the moment a familiar name appears on a screen or a loved one walks through the door. These moments of connection aren’t just emotional; they’re deeply meaningful to overall well-being. Staying connected helps reduce feelings of loneliness, supports mental health, and reminds our residents that they are still an important part of their family’s story. It reassures them that they are remembered, valued, and loved. If you’re unable to visit this holiday season, know that even small gestures go a long way. Share photos, record a holiday greeting, send a favorite treat, or reminisce about family traditions. What matters most is the reminder that love doesn’t disappear with distance or time—it adapts. From my place at the bedside and in the hallways, I can promise this: the greatest gift you can give your loved one this holiday season is connection. It’s felt long after the decorations come down, and it stays with them in the moments when they need it most.

A Magical Night at Bickford Cottage Santa made a special stop at Bickford Cottage in Davenport, bringing gifts—and big smiles—to our seniors! It was such a joyful evening filled with cookies, cocoa, laughter, and most importantly… family. A heartfelt thank you to Grace Lutheran Church for the adorable tins filled with goodies that made everything even sweeter. Your kindness truly brightened our residents’ hearts. Also, many thanks to those of you who adopted a resident and helped make this night possible. Watching their eyes light up as Santa appeared, knowing this brought them as much joy as it did when they were kids. You’re never too old to “Believe”! Our leadership team was feeling extra festive, and seeing kids filled with happiness made the night even more special. Moments like these remind us what the season is all about.
